Fraud Alerts: FDIC Fraudulent Email Scam
Alert: Fraudulent FDIC email alerts regarding failed banks being received
Residents in the River Bend area and across the country are receiving emails supposedly from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, or the FDIC, informing them that their bank has failed and the FDIC has seized assets of the bank. The customers are then instructed to download a program to determine their insurance coverage of their funds.
Emails with the subject line of "check your Bank Deposit Insurance Coverage" or "FDIC has officially named your bank a failed bank" are being sent out informing customers that their bank has 'failed' and that their funds are at risk. The body of the email is reportedly the same for both variations and is below.
You have received this message because you are a holder of a FDIC-insured bank account. Recently FDIC has officially named the bank you have opened your account with as a failed bank, thus, taking control of its assets.
You need to visit the official FDIC website and perform the following steps to check your Deposit InsuranceCoverage:

Download and open your personal FDIC Insurance File to check your Deposit Insurance Coverage
The link included in the email will prompt you to download an executable file, or a file ending in .exe, but it is currently not known what the program will do. Officials speculate it could be a monitoring program that, after entering in personal account information, it will record all future work (user IDs, passwords, account numbers, etc) and transmit them to the scammers where they will have full access to your accounts.
It is important to remember that the FDIC never sends unsolicited emails to anyone, either banks or bank customers. Should a bank be declared to have 'failed', notification is given to its customers through the branch itself or press releases issued by the FDIC. They will never notify a bank's customers to instruct them to download programs to ensure that their money is protected.
It should also be pointed out that no bank will ever send any email correspondence instructing you to download any programs or to log in to online banking systems to accept updates or for any other reason. Should you ever receive any emails instructing you to do so, it is best to either call your bank directly to verify its authenticity or to go to the bank's website directly, but NOT by clicking any links in the emails.
